Does SWA need to be earthed at both ends?
Yes, the armour should be earthed at least at the “supply” end. This ensures that anything that penetrates the cable (saw, drill, etc) will be earthed before the live cores are reached, and is therefore less likely to become energised.
Does SWA need a separate earth?
2-Core SWA Armoured Cable is live and neutral for Class II and Double Insulated appliances which do not need earth connection. 3-Core SWA Armoured Cables are live, neutral and earth, unlike 2-Core. Three core cable is for Class I or Single Insulated which must have earth connections.
How is SWA terminated?
A proper armoured gland kit is the only acceptable way of terminating SWA when an electrical connection to the armour wires is required (i.e. most cases) Using BS 951 type earthing clamps (as used for bonding to water & gas pipes) to connect to the armour is not acceptable.
Does a buried SWA cable need RCD protection?
swa’s steel armour is NOT accepted as sufficient protection for the cable when buried. there is no requirement to afford rcd protection to cables buried outside. socket circuits that COULD be used outdoors MUST have RCD protection, when this is a domestic installation.
Can you connect twin and earth to Armoured cable?
Yes you can join them together. But few things to be considered. (circuit protective conductor/Earthing) of the circuit, you have to make sure a solid connection between armoured and earth conductor of T&E cable.
Does an SWA cable need to be RCD protected?
Can you bury SWA cable?
Regulations are that cable is buried at least 18 inches. It must be SWA cable,or pyrotenex, any other cable must be in conduit and sealed against moisture. In a concrete floor, the SWA cable or conduit must be protected with an inch of concrete.
What are black brown and grey wires in armoured cable?
Table 7C – Standard 600/1000V armoured cable
Function | Old conductor | New conductor |
---|---|---|
Positive of two-wire circuit | Red | Brown |
Negative of two-wire circuit | Black | Grey |
Two-wire earthed d.c. power circuit | ||
Positive (of negative earthed) circuit | Red | Brown |
Does SWA need to be glanded?
all ends of SWA have to be glanded!
Can you use SWA armour as main earth?
In this case the SWA armour would provide the means of earthing for the remote building and it would also have to act as a main protective bonding conductor. It can be seen from Table 2 above that the CSA of the SWA is 131mm² which is adequate for earthing.
What Colour is earth in SWA?
and use the black as earth, but it needs green/yellow sleeve. If you use a colour other than brown for a live function (eg a switched live in a lighting circuit) this conductor should be tagged with a brown marker.
Can SWA cable be bent around any angle?
Any feed back greatfully recieved. SWA cable can be bent around any angle as long as the radius of the bend isn’t too tight. You can terminate the SWA cable in either a plastic of metal box using an SWA gland and earth ring (banjo) and the third wire should also be earthed.
What is the Earth Terminal cet002?
Pictured: Earth Terminal CET002 – shown terminating wire armoured cables with the armours in the splayed position. The CET system is complemented by a full range of BW brass cable glands and CW brass glands to BS6121 and stand off gland plates as well as the solid brass earth blocks – EB42 – frequently used on street furniture backboards.
Why does the SWA cable need to be de-rated?
In addition with a PME system there may be network circulating currents flowing normally in the protective conductors which may raise the temperature of the SWA cable. In these circumstances the cable will need to be de-rated to accommodate this temperature rise.
What is the CET earthing system?
The CET Earthing System is specified for the termination and bonding of all sizes of SWA armoured cables into confined spaces of street furniture – typical applications include street lighting columns, feeder pillars or traffic signs.
