What is Square Root?

Square Root centers on a contemporary kitchen, in which Chef Phillip Lopez’s modern techniques are the main attraction. The restaurant showcases a chef’s tasting menu of 9 to 15 small plate courses. In the open kitchen, diners experience the art of the meal from start to finish. The downstairs dining space features sweeping floor to ceiling windows, framing the interior, accented by stainless steel, concrete, wrought iron, natural woods, and Italian porcelain.

What is Root2?

The second floor is home to Root2, an artisanal charcuterie and cheese studio with an extensive wine selection and full bar. This is a no reservation food and drink destination for the frequent diner. Root2 offers a selective menu of salumi, charcuterie, and sausages. Chef Phillip pairs all items with seasonal accoutrements, such as spicy-sweet-savory mustards, fruit and vegetable preserves, and pickles. Diners also enjoy house-crafted cheeses and a small plate list from which dishes can become a complete meal. Square Root is located at 1800 Magazine Street in the Lower Garden District of New Orleans.

What are the hours of operation?

We are open Tuesday through Saturday. The first reservation for Square Root is available at 6:00PM and the last reservation is at 9:00PM.

Do I need a reservation for Square Root?

Dining at Square Root is by reservation only.

How far in advance can I book a reservation at Square Root?

Reservations are available up to 30 days in advance and can be made online through our website or at opentable.com.

Why this type of reservation system?

We have chosen to only make reservations available online because of the intimate size and scope of the restaurant. The restaurant has 16 seats so seating is at a premium.

How much does Square Root cost?

We offer an eight to nine course tasting on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for $95 per person INCLUSIVE of tax and service charge. The total price of the experience includes: Dinner $73.22 + Tax $7.14 + Service Charge $14.64 = $95 per person.

We offer a twelve to fifteen course tasting on Friday and Saturday for $150 per person INCLUSIVE of tax and service charge. The total price of the experience includes: Dinner $115.61 + Tax $11.27 + Service Charge $23.12 = $150 per person.

Beverages are not included and will be billed the night you dine.

What are beverage pairing options?

We offer optional beverage pairings to complement your dining experience.

On weekdays, the Spirits Pairing is $45, the Sommelier’s Wine Pairing is $65, and the Reserve Wine Pairing is $95. We also offer a Non-Alcoholic Beverage Pairing for $35.

On weekends, the Spirits Pairing is $75, the Sommelier’s Wine Pairing is $95, and the Reserve Wine Pairing is $150. The Non-Alcoholic Beverage Pairing is $45.

All beverage pairings are priced per person and are EXCLUSIVE of tax and service charge. Beverages will be billed the night you dine.

Can I bring my own wine?

Yes, you can bring your own wine in for a $50 corkage fee per bottle.

Why is a service charge added?

By law, we are not allowed to share voluntary gratuity. By charging a mandatory service charge we are allowed the ability to create greater opportunity for our entire staff.

How long is the experience?

We recommend allocating one and a half hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and two and a half hours on Fridays and Saturdays to enjoy the complete experience.

I am going to be late for my reservation. What should I do?

If you are going to be late, you should call the restaurant immediately at 504-309-7800 and speak to the hostess. Guests will be granted a fifteen-minute grace period after their scheduled reservation time. After that, the experience will begin without them. If you are later than 30 minutes of your scheduled reservation time, you must forego your reservation entirely. Parties arriving later than 30 minutes of a scheduled reservation will be considered a last-minute cancellation and you will be charged the full tasting menu price ($95 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; $150 on Friday & Saturday).

I need to cancel my reservation. What should I do?

We allow cancellations up to 72 hours prior to your reservation date, at no charge to you. After that time, you will be charged the full tasting menu price ($95 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; $150 on Friday & Saturday). Please note that cancellations are only considered final once you have received a cancellation email.

What happens if I don’t show up for my reservation?

Because the restaurant is small, it is very important that each party show up in a timely manner. If you do not show up for your reservation, you will be charged the full tasting menu price ($95 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; $150 on Friday & Saturday). May I give my reservation to somebody else?

What is on the menu?

The menu at Square Root is constantly evolving. The meal on any given night is largely based on what is fresh, both in terms of ingredients and inspiration by Chef Phillip Lopez.

Will I be able to order from the menu à la carte?

The menu each night will be determined prior to your arrival, so there isn’t a traditional menu in which you select your meal. However, we assure you that any food allergies or restrictions you have will be taken into consideration when the chefs create your meal.
