It has been suggested that Barringun, in the language of the Barranbinya Aborigines, means ‘fish die in water’ which is plausible given the harshness of the climate in the region. There isn’t really anything to do in Barringun because it is nothing more than a pub on the Queensland – New South Wales border.

Where did the name Barringun come from?

The name Barringun derives from an early settlement (possibly a pastoral station) on the Warrego River, which can be seen on an 1887 map as being just south of the New South Wales border. It is possibly an Aboriginal word meaning fish die in the water.
