Are garters and suspenders the same?
“Garter belt” is used more frequently in American English, and “suspender belt” more often in British English. As we have customers on both sides of the pond, you’ll find us using both terms, but they are exactly the same thing. To put it simply, they are garments designed for holding up stockings!
What are the purpose of garter straps?
A garter strap can help prevent stockings from falling. Before the invention of materials such as elastic or rubber, stockings were not able to stay up on their own. Garter bands at the top of the stockings and the garter straps attached to the bands provided the needed support to keep stockings in place.
What is the difference between a garter and a garter belt?
These terms are used interchangeably and refer to the same thing – just a garter. In my next garter 101 blog advice series, I’m going to tell you, hopefully once and for all, the difference between a garter and a garter belt. These are confusing terms, I totally get it!
Is it weird to wear a garter without stockings?
Whatever the reason, garter belts were first created to hold up pantyhose before they were made of nylon that could hold up on their own. No one estimated that the sexy factor of garter belts would be around to stay. Today, you can wear them with or without pantyhose, for any reason you see fit.
How do you wear a garter everyday?
For daily wear, you need six garters minimum to truly hold up your stockings and keep everything in place – two in front, two in back, and two along your thighs. Some people prefer the extra security of eight straps, but this is mostly a matter of personal preference.
How do you wear a garter under your clothes?
To attach your thigh highs to your garter belt, just follow these simple steps:
- Put your garter belt on.
- Put your pantyhose/stockings on.
- Attach the clasps on the garter straps to the pantyhose/stockings.
- Adjust the straps for comfort.
- Make sure to put your underwear on after your garter belt for easier restroom maneuvers.
How tight should a garter be?
Your wedding garter should fit snugly so that it won’t fall down, but not so tight that it leaves a mark or cuts off circulation. You are going to be wearing your wedding garter for several hours and depending on when/if you do a wedding garter toss, you might be doing some dancing with it on.
Should garters show?
If your dress is tighter through the legs, you’ll need to not only try it on before your wedding to make sure that it doesn’t show through, but you’ll need to get the placement right. If there is a high slit in the back, just make sure that your garter isn’t visible when you walk (Or maybe you want it to be!)!
What is wedding garter?
The wedding garter is a piece of bridal lingerie worn under the wedding dress. During the reception, the groom will remove the garter from underneath the bride’s gown (with his hands or teeth) and toss it into the crowd. The garter toss is very similar to the bouquet toss.
Why does a bride wear 2 garters?
Many brides who wear two garters don’t want to loose their main garter and would rather not think about having to get it back after the toss, so they opt to wear a second garter. (As someone once told me at a wedding show: “One to show, one to go!”)
