Is RAF Waddington still open?
HISTORY. RAF Waddington has been almost continuously active since opening as a Royal Flying Corps training base in 1916 teaching hundreds of pilots to fly a wide variety of aircraft. With the run-down of squadrons after the War, the Station was put on a care and maintenance basis in 1920.

What will happen to RAF Waddington?
In December 2020, the RAF announced that its new fleet of Boeing E-7 Wedgetail AEW1 aircraft are to be based at RAF Lossiemouth in Moray from 2023. The Airborne early warning and control aircraft will replace Waddington’s E-3D Sentry AEW1 fleet. No. 8 Squadron will relocate to Lossiemouth to operate the new aircraft.

Between June 2011 and March 2014 14 Squadron, 12 (Bomber) Squadron and 617 Squadron ‘The Dambusters’ were disbanded. The Tornado era ended at RAF Lossiemouth in March 2017 when XV (Reserve) Squadron disbanded.
Why do the RAF fly in circles?
A common mitigation is to turn it slightly to one direction, so it makes a circle, staying more or less in the same place. The smaller the circle, the tighter the turn, the lower the hovering efficiency and loitering time. Even a helicopter will use less fuel when it’s flying around in circles than when it’s hovering.
Can the public visit RAF Scampton?
