How does oocyte cryopreservation work?

Egg freezing, technically called oocyte cryopreservation, refers to the process of freezing a woman’s eggs. The eggs are removed from the ovary in an IVF procedure, slow or fast frozen and then stored at below freezing temperatures so that they can be thawed and fertilized at a later date.

How can long oocytes be frozen?

Eggs (oocytes) are frozen using either a controlled-rate, slow-cooling method or a newer flash-freezing process known as vitrification. Vitrification is much faster but requires higher concentrations of cryoprotectants to be added. The result of vitrification is a solid glass-like cell, free of ice crystals.

How is embryo cryopreservation done?

There are two methods to freeze embryos: vitrification and slow freezing. In vitrification, fertility professionals: Add a cryoprotective agent (CPA) to the embryos. CPA is a liquid that acts like antifreeze and protects cells from ice crystals.

How are oocytes stored?

The maturity of the eggs is assessed under the microscope, and those that are mature are cryopreserved. Currently, vitrification is the method of choice for cryopreserving oocytes, and this is achieved by ultra-rapid cooling into liquid nitrogen where they can be stored.

What is cryopreservation in IVF?

Embryo cryopreservation involves in vitro fertilization, a procedure in which eggs are removed from a woman’s ovary and combined with sperm in the laboratory to form embryos. The embryos are frozen and can later be thawed and placed in a woman’s uterus. Embryo cryopreservation is a type of fertility preservation.

What stage is oocyte frozen?

It has been showed that oocytes frozen at the germinal vesicle (GV) stage survive better than those frozen at the metaphase-II stage [61]. Additionally, oocytes frozen at the GV stage have lower rates of abnormalities in the resulting meiotic spindle than oocytes frozen at the MII stage [59].

Is it better to freeze eggs or embryos?

Higher Success Rate While the survival rate for freezing eggs vs. freezing embryos is similar, there is actually a slightly higher chance of survival for embryo freezing. Thanks to modern science, about 90% of frozen eggs survive; meanwhile, about 95% of embryos survive.

Are you asleep during egg retrieval?

Egg retrievals are performed in our office. The day of retrieval, an IV will be put in and antibiotics will be given. You will also be given a sedative to help you relax, but you will be awake during the procedure.

Is embryo transfer painful in IVF?

The IVF process is usually not painful, although a person may experience mild discomfort at some stages. As IVF involves the injection of fertility medication, there may be mild bruising and pain at the injection site. A person may also experience abdominal cramping that may be painful.

Is it painful to freeze your eggs?

In short, egg freezing does not hurt your future fertility.

Is egg freezing same as IVF?

Also known as oocyte cryopreservation, egg freezing involves harvesting a woman’s eggs and freezing them so she can attempt pregnancy at a later date through in vitro fertilization (IVF). Having the option to freeze eggs can be a valuable, life-changing one for some women.

Which is better fresh or frozen embryo transfer?

Many fertility specialists and treatment providers indicate that frozen embryo transfers provide a higher pregnancy success rate than using fresh embryos during assisted reproductive technology.

How do you prepare your body for a frozen embryo transfer?

When sleeping before your embryo transfer, try to:

  1. Keep your bedroom between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Diffuse lavender in your bedroom or bathroom.
  3. Avoid caffeine four to six hours before you go to sleep.
  4. Stop eating two to three hours before you go to sleep.
  5. Listen to relaxing music.
