How was Hornsea Mere formed?
Hornsea Mere is the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire and was formed at the end of the Ice Age. Due to its closeness to the North Sea, the lake attracts a variety of wintering birds including gadwalls, goldeneyes, and tufted ducks. The mere’s reedbeds provide breeding sites for hundreds of pairs of reed warblers.

Between 1878 and 1880 a 1,072 feet (327 m) pier was constructed – it was damaged within a year after a ship collided with it during a storm, shortening it by 300 feet (91 m). In 1897 the pier was sold for demolition. The entrance building remained as an amusement arcade until the 1920s.
