Surf fishing has been a popular recreational activity on Assateague Island for generations. While late spring and fall draw most anglers to the beach, surf fishing offers a challenge no matter what the season.
Do you need a fishing license to surf fish at Assateague Island?

Where can I fish on Assateague Island?

- Surf fishing on the beach is allowed at the State Park as long as it is done outside of the day-use area swim beach.
- Bay fishing is allowed at the marina piers and from boats in the designated areas of the bay.

Open fires are allowed at designated sites on the beach, by permit only. Elsewhere on the beach fires must be contained in a metal container, but do not require a permit. Open campfires are only allowed at designated sites (Site A, B, or C) and require a permit. Fire permits are free of charge.

How do you catch flounder in Chincoteague?
Flounder will eat almost anything. They’ve been caught on eels, shrimp, crabs, silversides, strips of cut bait, and most predominantly live bait. Minnows and squid strips are far and away the most popular baits in our area. There are many flounder rigs available in the local tackle shops.
