What is conductive thread used for?
Conductive thread is perfect for adding electronics into textiles (clothing, hats, bags etc.). This does not have to be just LEDs. The thread could be used to connect many different types of sensors or input devices, and also many types of output devices.
How do you insulate conductive threads?
Stretch Fabric Glue. Using stretchy fabric glue is a great way to cover conductive thread without interfering too much with the flex of the fabric it is sewn into. This type of glue is typically used to fuse two pieces of fabric together, but can also provide a nice protective layer if applied on top of fabric.
Can you use conductive thread in a sewing machine?
Our conductive thread can be both hand stitched and machine sewn. The thread is much thicker than normal thread and is similar to embroidery thread. The thread can be wound on sewing machines and used just like any other thread. When using the thread with a sewing machine, make sure you use a bobbin.
What are conductive threads made from?
There are different types of conductive thread, including some made from copper, tin, nickel and silver; but, most are made from spun stainless steel that have been tightly wound together.
How strong is conductive thread?
Because it is strong and smooth, its ideal for any wearable/e-textile project. It also has fairly low resistivity, 16 ohms per foot so you can use it to drive LEDs and other electronic components that use under ~50mA. Our 3 ply thread has a resistance of 10 ohms per foot for components that use under ~100mA.
Why was conductive thread invented?
Timeline. 1600 — Early conductive threads are said to date back to the Elizabethan era when gold threads were woven into garments for a gleaming accent. Now, we often use silver, or nickel threads for conductivity, but the concept of metallic threads has existed for centuries for decorating garments.
Can you wash conductive thread?
It is thicker than standard cotton/poly thread and can be used by hand or in industrial sewing machines. Because it is made of stainless steel fibers, it will not oxidize like silver does: your projects will not ‘stop working’ because of oxidation after a few months and its safe to wash.
Is conductive thread safe?
In some textile-based projects, this is the most practical tool to maintain the hang of the fabric. Educationally, it’s a very safe and unintimidating way to learn how to use embedded electronics.
How do you connect conductive threads?
Insert the needle under a previous stitch. Pull the thread almost all the way through, leaving a small loop. Put your needle through this loop and pull the thread through, creating a tight knot. Don’t forget to seal the knot with Fray Check or clear nail polish before trimming the tail closely.
