Can you lay vinyl flooring over carpet underlay?

Nonetheless, the great question is, can you use carpet underlay under vinyl flooring? As carpet underlays are generally thicker than what is needed, reaching up to 10 mm in thickness, it would not be advisable to install vinyl over it. Having this thick underlay under the vinyl will make the flooring unstable.

Just like ceramic tile, linoleum needs to be installed on a flat surface that will bond with the adhesive used in installation, such as plywood or cement, but not carpet or carpet padding.

Do you need to put underlay under vinyl?

Most vinyl floors don’t need an underlay. If the surface you’re laying on is level and smooth, a well-cushioned vinyl floor should be fine on its own. Our Luxury Vinyl Click flooring is laid using the same as technique as laminate options in that it’s loose laid creating a “floating floor”.

Should you put underlay under vinyl flooring?

Generally speaking, the design of vinyl flooring prevents any need for underlay. This is because vinyl flooring comes with a base layer that already acts as an underlay, removing the need for any additional flooring aids. By design, vinyl flooring is exceptionally stable.

What kind of flooring can you put over carpet?

The most common type of floors floated over carpet are vinyl and laminate, given they are budget-friendly and feature a simple interlocking system of installation.

What is the underlayment for vinyl flooring?

Can You Lay vinyl planks over carpet?

Vinyl planks resemble wood in various textures, and they are quick and easy to install, but it is a different story when you still have a carpet-covered floor. You can lay your vinyl planks over your carpet if you cannot strip it off your floor for one reason or another.

Will installing underlayment void my luxury vinyl flooring warranty?

Indentions can be an issue as well, which is why most luxury vinyl tile and luxury vinyl planks are sold with a backing layer already in place. There a few companies and product lines that are exceptions, but there is a strong chance that you could void your warranty if you attempt to install foam or cork beneath LVP with pre-attached underlayment.

Can you put underlayment over wood flooring?

Fun fact: concrete flooring that looks like wood is another popular wood alternative, but it’s so hard to walk on! Adding underlayment over a wood subfloor can help with sound and comfort. Even the best vinyl plank floors may sound hollow if they’re put atop wood subflooring.
