How do you chase ICF walls?

Hot knives, hand saws or routers can be used to create the voids in the ICF walls for electrical wiring and boxes. Hot knives in particular can easily cut a chase both horizontally and vertically through EPS (Expanded Polystyrene), to allow the wiring/conduit to fit into the void created.

Can you cut ICF blocks?

Cutting block is also required to create openings for windows and doors. The Expanded Polystyrene Foam that makes up BuildBlock ICFs is very easy to cut and the blocks are designed with a 1-inch repeating interlock pattern that produces very little waste.

What is the R value of an ICF wall?

ICF walls consist of a center cavity to contain concrete between two layers of EPS which provide two continuous layers of insulation rated at R-22 and higher.

Can you put plumbing in an ICF wall?

In the event that the pipe you are required to use is larger that 2-1/2” you will have to frame around the pipe with lumber. This is still easily done. Obviously it is easiest if you can avoid putting any plumbing in an ICF wall during the design stage. Note: All plumbing work is to be done by a licensed plumber.

When can I remove ICF bracing?

If the walls are below grade and are to be backfilled, remove the bracing after the wall has developed adequate strength and is supported laterally at the top by the floor or roof, and at the bottom by the floor. Above grade walls should also be allowed to cure properly to obtain adequate strength.

How far apart should ICF bracing be?

5 to 6 feet apart
Nearly always, this works out to be no more than 5 to 6 feet apart, regardless of the brand of ICF used. Additional braces are needed near window and door openings, on corners, and T-intersections. Bracing should be placed no more than 5 or 6 feet apart.
