How does a switchblade mechanism work?
When the blade is fully extended flanges on the blade engage pins on the cocking arm retarding the blade’s motion. The blade is locked in position when the rear notch of the blade allows the button to return to its rest position. Even if the button is pressed spring tension holds the knife open.
How does a stiletto switchblade work?
A button on the side of the knife is attached to a catch lever which pops in between the coils of the spring, holding the spring taut. When the button is pressed, the lever moves out of the way and the spring pulls back into its original shape, turning the blade on its hinge to extend from the front of the handle.
Do automatic knives wear out?
If the mechanism still does not function correctly, it is a sign of excessive wear and tear. Over time and use, the mechanism wears out. If your OTF knife is struggling to release or failing to retract easily, even after a thorough cleaning, it’s a good sign that it is time to replace it.
How does a switchblade open?
Unlike your typical folding knives that require a manual approach, switchblades can be propelled into action by activating the switch which in turn activates the spring that ejects the blade. Switchblades also host the blade in the grip handle/enclosure but may differ in opening mechanism and blade propulsion.
Are switchblades legal in USA?
There is no federal restriction on ownership, possession or carrying of a switchblade knife. There are some states that have enacted laws regarding switchblades (see State Laws Regarding Auto-Open Knives). The majority of states allow auto-open knives.
Can a civilian buy an automatic knife online?
Federal law prohibits the shipment of ‘injurious articles’—which includes automatic knives. The penalty for breaking this law is a fine or imprisonment for not more than one year. However, there is no federal restriction on shipment of automatic knives by common/contract carriers, such as FedEx and UPS.
Are automatic knives worth it?
They make an excellent self-defense weapon. Automatic knives are easy to handle and great for self-defense. They fit into the hand much easier than many folding or assisted opening counterparts and are far easier to carry than fixed blade knives.
What is the difference between a switchblade and an automatic knife?
If there is nothing blocking the blade and it stays closed, the knife is an assisted opener (assuming it has a mechanism to help open the knife). Another way to look at it: If you are able to open the blade without exerting any effort on the actual blade, it’s a switchblade.
