What is the harm thesis?

According to the harm thesis, death is, at least sometimes, bad for those who die, and in this sense something that ‘harms’ them. It is important to know what to make of this thesis, since our response itself can be harmful.

Death is the greatest harm that most will suffer, but it is a special sort of harm; unlike typical harms, the event of death does not cause things to go worse for us than things otherwise would have been going, because we do not exist after we die.
