Should pickups be flat?
In most cases the flat-pole pickup will give you a better string balance. The high E won’t get buried in the mix like a staggered-pole pickup can. You will also notice that the two low strings are louder than a staggered-pole set, and the G string does not overpower the others.
How close should guitar pickups be to strings?
Start by setting all of your guitar pickups to 3/32” (0.093”, 2.38mm) on the bass side and 2/32” (1/16”, 0.0625”, 1.98mm) on the treble side. Remember, this is the space between the top of the pole piece and the bottom of the string, held down at the last fret.

Is a Trembucker necessary?
If you’re not sure which spacing your particular guitar requires, simply measure from the centre of each of the E strings. If the spacing is two inches (50mm), you require a Humbucker. If the spacing is greater than two inches, you need a Trembucker.
How much space should be between pickups and strings?
For standard, full-size humbuckers, a reasonable starting point for the bridge pickup is at least 1/16″ (1.5mm) from the high E and 5/64″ (2 mm) from the low E. There are no recommended distances for the other 4 strings.
How do you adjust the pickup Poles?
Only adjust screw or hex-head pickup poles. The ones that are meant to be adjustable. By raising the screw pole-pieces into an arc matching the string radius, you will even out the distance between each string and its associated pole.
Should the pickup be closer to the pole or D string?
If you play a wound G, bring that pole piece higher even than the D string. Our natural inclination is to adjust the pickup closer under the first couple of strings because they look so wimpy. That’s not always a good idea, though.
Where is the G string pole on a guitar pickup?
