What are fifth graders learning in science?
Fifth grade science includes the study of topics like Earth, space, engineering, and matter. Students will take part in hands-on projects and investigations to better help them understand concepts, as well as get a feel for the work that scientists do.

The CAST is an untimed test that is designed to take approximately two hours to complete. Some students may require less time, some students may require more.

What kind of math is on the cast test?
The four aptitude tests that combine to form the CAST are Graphic Arithmetic, Mechanical Concepts, Reading for Comprehension, and Mathematical Usage. The Graphic Arithmetic test contains two drawings. The test will evaluate the applicant’s ability to use information from the drawings to solve arithmetic problems.
Is the cast science test mandatory?
All students must take the CAST by the end of grade twelve, but have the option of testing in grade ten or grade eleven. Only eligible students may participate in the administration of the CAST. Students assigned to take an alternate assessment should take the California Alternate Assessment for Science.
How hard is the cast test?
In general, the CAST aptitude test pass score – is in the upper 20%. So, you have to be better than 80% of test takers to pass.

Do not bring a calculator, dictionary, or anything else for the test. You won’t be allowed to use them.

Can parents opt out of state testing for their child? Yes. California Education Code section 60615 allows a parent or guardian to submit a written request to school officials to exclude his or her child from any or all parts of state-mandated assessments.
