How do I find my bike hub size?
Hub Flange Diameter – The distance across the hub’s flange from hole to hole….Here’s how to measure these distances:
- Figure out the distance between the lock nuts (where the hub sits in the dropouts) – 100 or 110 mm is typical for the front.
- Take that number and divide by 2.
- Then measure from the flange to the lock nut.
Are all bike hubs the same size?
For the vast majority of bikes, that is where we are now for axle and hub standards. Most road, CX, and gravel bikes come with 12X100mm thru axle front and 12X142mm thru axle rear. Most mountain bikes come with 15X110mm thru axle front and 12X148mm thru axle rear.
What are the different types of bike hubs?
There are four types of hubs available: the track hub, the flip flop hub, the freewheel hub or the cassette hub. The recommended way to go for a fixed gear setup is to construct a new rear wheel.
What are road bike hubs?
The hub is the engine room of the road bike wheel, usually consisting of an alloy body with two sets of bearings through which the axle is threaded (a quick-release skewer runs through the axle to secure the wheel to the frame or fork).
How do I choose a bike hub?
Choosing a hub Hubs have to be matched to the front or rear of your bike; each will be a different size. Rear hubs typically feature a broad mounting platform for the cassette, and each rear hub is made to specifically match a certain class of cassettes.
How do I choose a road bike hub?
Choosing a hub Hubs are generally 100mm wide in front and 130mm wide in the rear for road bike frames; mountain bikers generally use 135-142mm front and rear hubs to allow space for disc brakes, which require extra material on the outer edge of the hub for mounting the disc.
Should I upgrade my hubs?
Silent or quieter hubs are usually considered an upgrade. If you really want a noisy hub you can but a replacement hub and have the wheel rebuilt. Wheel rebuilds almost always require new spokes and take a couple hours of labor so it’s very often more cost effective to simply buy a new wheel.
Can you change the hub on a bike wheel?
Simple answer: yes, but it’s not worth doing. Cost of hub, spokes, nipples and having wheel rebuilt will exceed the cost of a new wheel. Even if you re-use the spokes a new wheel will still be cheaper. Wheel building requires special equipment, expertise and time to do correctly.

Are bike hubs worth upgrading?
The quality of your hubs has a significant effect on the weight, rotational resistance and rigidity of your wheels. An upgrade hub is likely to have better bearings, that could potentially be cartridge bearings; these are likely to last longer and be more easily replaced when they have had their day.
What are the disadvantages of a hub?
Disadvantages of hub :
- It runs half-duplex.
- Can not filter information.
- It can not connect different type of network architecture such as a token ring and Ethernet extra.
- It does not have a mechanism to reduce the network traffic.
- Passes packet to all connected segment.
- Can not reduce network traffic.
