What is the best wood to make a longbow out of?

Yew is typically regarded as the best wood for making longbows. However, as individual bowyers have their own preferences, some choose to make longbows from white oak, red oak, hickory, red elm, American elm, Osage orange or rock maple instead.

How long does it take to make a longbow?

The traditional construction of a longbow consists of drying the yew wood for 1 to 2 years, then slowly working the wood into shape, with the entire process taking up to four years.

Can you leave a longbow strung?

It probably does not hurt leaving a longbow strung for longer than a week. However, any time I intend to stop shooting for more than a couple of minutes (e.g., use the restroom), I unbrace my bow to re-brace it when I continue.
