Why was kendo banned?

Kendo was officially born in 1920. After WWII, kendo was banned by the occupational forces because of the militarized use of martial arts by Japan during the war.

Is kendo like sword fighting?

Kendo is not like real sword fighting and is more of a sport like fencing. Kendo is based on the ancient art of Kenjutsu, which is an umbrella term for Japanese swordsmanship. But Kendo’s ultimate goal is about the refinement of one’s character and not self-defense or injuring an opponent.

Is kendo a martial art?

It is kendo, or the way of the sword. Kendo is one of traditional Japanese martial arts, or budo, that arose from the samurai, or warrior in feudal Japan, fighting with bamboo “swords.”Kendo players wear protective gear like armor over kimono-like training wear. Kendo differs from many other sports.

Does kendo use Katana?

Kendo does not use the metal sword known as a katana and instead is most often practiced with bamboo swords known as a shinai. But Kendo is descended from Kenjutsu, which did use a katana. The shinai is similar but made of bamboo for safety reasons.

How many years does it take to learn kendo?

It usually takes an adult three to four years to obtain their sho-dan, while some people who may have had previous martial arts experience will take as few as two. Each successive rank requires training in your current rank for the same number of years as the rank you are testing for.

How long does it take to master kendo?

Can you get a black belt in kendo?

Kendo, like other martial arts has a system of ranks. These are referred to as Kyu, Dan and Shogo. Dan are the rank that are attained and referred to in the Western world as black belt. Shogo are titles that are attained now beginning at the rank 6 dan.

What age can you start kendo?

Some start at 3 years old. Some starts in their 50s and 60s. Usually a dojo (training place) has their rules on age as well. My dojo in Japan used to tell us to start at the age of 7.
