What is the point of sigma algebra?

Sigma algebra is necessary in order for us to be able to consider subsets of the real numbers of actual events. In other words, the sets need to be well defined, under the conditions of countable unions and countable intersections, for it to have probabilities assigned to it.

What is the difference between an algebra and a sigma algebra?

An algebra is a collection of subsets closed under finite unions and intersections. A sigma algebra is a collection closed under countable unions and intersections.

What is trivial sigma algebra?

Trivial sigma-algebra. The algebra of subsets of a set Ω consisting only of the empty set and the set Ω. Sigma-algebra generated by singletons. The collection of subsets of a set Ω which are countable or whose complements are countable.

Is sigma algebra a ring?

A σ-algebra Σ is just a σ-ring that contains the universal set X. A σ-ring need not be a σ-algebra, as for example measurable subsets of zero Lebesgue measure in the real line are a σ-ring, but not a σ-algebra since the real line has infinite measure and thus cannot be obtained by their countable union.

How do you find the sigma algebra of a Partion?

First, we know that in order to show that a partion C = { C 1, C 2,…, C n } of a set E, generates a sigma algebra that contains all the unions of elements of C, we have to do the following steps: We also define E that we want to show that is generated from C as E = { ⋃ i ∈ I C i: I ⊂ N } and we show that is sigma algebra

How to prove that E is a sigma algebra?

E ∈ C: C is a partition of E, so ∪ C = E. Since C is countable, ∪ C is the union of countably many members of C. But we shouldn’t do that E ∈ E and not E ∈ C? As we want to show that E is a sigma algebra. E is closed under complement: Let A ∈ C, so there exists a countable C A ⊆ C such that A = ∪ C A.

What is the difference between an algebra of sets and σ-algebra?

An algebra of sets needs only to be closed under the union or intersection of finitely many subsets, which is a weaker condition. The main use of σ-algebras is in the definition of measures; specifically, the collection of those subsets for which a given measure is defined is necessarily a σ-algebra.
