The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that at the end of 2015, 36.7 million [34.0–39.8 million] people were living with HIV and an estimated 0.8% of adults aged 15 – 49 years are infected with HIV (8). Women represent a little over half of all adults living with HIV worldwide.
