What grit is best for sharpening lathe tools?

We suggest 320 grit or higher. The higher you go (up to 400 or 600 grit) the finer your edge will be.

How often do you need to sharpen lathe tools?

You should expect to sharpen your tools about once every 15 – 30 minutes if you are using the same tool and turning continuously within this time.

What angle do you hold lathe tools?

about a 30º angle
Generally, holding the tool at about a 30º angle from the tool rest is effective.

What is the difference between Tormek T4 and T8?

Either the T4 or the T8 is an excellent Tormek. The T4 is more compact and portable. The T8 now has abrasive on one side of the diamond wheels. (a nice feature, however, we used Tormeks without this feature for forty years).

How often should you sharpen wood turning tools?

about every 10 to 15 minutes
Tools can degrade surprisingly quickly and will need maintenance several times during a single project. On average, take time to sharpen your equipment about every 10 to 15 minutes. Sometimes they can be sharpened less or more frequently, depending on how they sound, feel, and the shavings they produce.

How do I grind my lathe tools?

I grind most lathe tools using a bench grinder. This is equipped with a small grinding rest as shown here which is scribed with lines at 10 degree intervals. The rest height and angle can be adjusted. More details of the grinding rest are here.

What is a little jig for grinding threading tools?

The little jig shown in the header photo was constructed for grinding threading tools. It can also be used to grind other lathe tools if the angle must be exact. The jig is very simple and consists of a piece of 1/8″ x 3″ steel with a 6 mm square pivoting arm secured by a small M3 socket head screw.

What is a multi-grind jig?

The included and versatile Multi-Grind Jig will correctly shape the edge on bowl gouges, side grinds (aka Ellsworth grind, Liam O’Neil grind/Irish grind) or fingernail grinds for spindle work and detailing. Not only will it correctly shape your tools, you will also be able to repeat the process to produce consistent results every time.

What is the best jig for sharpening woodworking tools?

Without getting into the specifics of slow speed grinding and sharpening vs high speed grinding, the Wolverine jig is perfect for sharpening wood working tools for the wood lathe. I say perfect because it’s well built, fast and accurate with a little practice.
