How do I know if there will be turbulence on my flight?

You’ll see a bunch of different symbols and numbers. The numbers indicate the altitude the reporting aircraft was flying at when the turbulence was reported. For example, moderate turbulence at “360” indicates rough air at 36,000 feet. Note — Turbulence Forecast also has an app by the same name for your mobile device.

How accurate is Turbli?

Comparison of 6 months of data from aircraft measurements shows that the prediction skill of NOAA’s latest GTG turbulence forecasts (the one we use in turbli) was about 0.85 AUC.

Can turbulence be forecasted?

Turbulence can rip an aircraft apart in flight, damage the airframe, and cause injury. Therefore, accurate turbulence forecasts are an important part of an aviation brief. If forecasters understand the basics of atmospheric turbulence, they will better analyze and forecast this dangerous phenomenon.

How do you read a turbulence map?

The number on top indicates the height of the advisory (add two zeros at the end to convert to feet). The height on the bottom indicates the starting altitude (again, add two zeros to the end to get feet). XXX means all the way to the ground. Red bubbles – indicate the chance for stormy weather.

How often are the turbulence and wind maps updated?

They are updated every 6 hours. In the turbulence map, some regions at lower altitudes might not show data due to being below the terrain. In the wind map, data is shown in all regions. In those below the terrain, the data is obtained interpolating between the closest available points over the terrain.

What do the blue circles mean on the turbulence map?

Get a forecast by email. This map shows where actual turbulence has been encountered in the past couple of hours in the US. Blue circles mean that the flight was smooth in that area. See the key on the bottom of the map. Add 00 to the altitudes to convert to feet.
