William Banting
William Banting (c. December 1796 – 16 March 1878) was a notable English undertaker. Formerly obese, he is also known for being the first to popularise a weight loss diet based on limiting the intake of carbohydrates, especially those of a starchy or sugary nature.

Why is it called the Banting diet?

The first known low-carb diet is widely attributed to William Banting (1796-1878). Banting authored a booklet that detailed his plan. His booklet was so popular that “banting” became a term for dieting.

Who started Banting?

Well, to tell the full story, we’ll need to take you back to the mid-1800s. In 1861 an obese British undertaker, named William Banting, asked his doctor how he could lose weight. The doctor came up with a low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) eating plan that also included moderate to high protein levels.

What did William Banting eat?

Banting didn’t know his new diet was a ketogenic routine, but that was the effect — he strictly limited how much bread, sugar, beer, and potatoes he ate, subsisting instead on small quantities of meat, fish, vegetables, and, of course, the occasional “large cup of tea.”

What can u eat on Banting diet?

Eat: Meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, high-fat dairy, fats, healthy oils and maybe even some tubers and non-gluten grains. Don’t eat: Sugar, HFCS, wheat, seed oils, trans fats, “diet” and low-fat products and highly processed foods.
