How long does it take to drive the whole Highway 1?

To drive the entire coastal CA Highway 1 takes 10-12 hours without stops. But this road trip is all about the stops! Plan on a minimum of 3 days and 2 nights. However, a 5-day itinerary is ideal for the San Francisco to LA trip with the first and last night spent in each city.
Where does the PCH start and stop?
The PCH begins in Southern California at Interstate 5 south of San Juan Capistrano, and it ends at U.S. 101 in Leggett in Mendocino County.
Is it better to drive up or down PCH?
Driving the route from north to south is ideal, as you’ll be on the ocean side of the road the entire way, allowing unobstructed views of the jagged coastline below. Three days is a minimum, and if time allows you could easily spend more.
Is the 17 mile drive scary?
The drive, itself, isn’t really all that scary, unless you have a fear of heights. Then parts of that drive might make you feel uncomfortable. Personally, it’s one of my all time favorite drives and I was the Nervous Nellie in the car as a child. The views are worth the effort…..

In total, there are 17 marked stops on this route. While most people enter through the north gate and head south, you can also start from the south and head north. It is not a one-way street nor a loop, but is a two lane road that allows you to drive either north or south.

The posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour (90 kilometers per hour) applies to most of Highway 1 through Big Sur, though the posted speed limit is 45 miles per hour (70 kilometers per hour) in the area called Big Sur Valley, between mile markers 45 and 50, and in the area north of Big Sur called Carmel Highlands.
