How do you trigger ED-E dialogue?
Trigger ED-E’s first audio log via dialogue about technology or the Enclave: Repeatedly talk to an NCR trooper standing outside of HELIOS One. You can also gain entrance to HELIOS One and talk to several troopers inside to trigger the first log. Talk to Doctor Henry at Jacobstown about his experience with the Enclave.
How do you fix ED-E?
ED-E may occasionally lose the dialogue option for his daily repair, even after waiting 24 hours. To fix this, travel to the Divide and back and the option should reappear.

How do you upgrade ED-E in lonesome road?
Just talk to ED-E – you’ll notice you have new dialogue options as soon as you found an upgrade (repair gun, make energy cells etc.). Then, after finishing Lonesome Road, all the upgrades you found will be transfered to ED-E in the main game.
Can ED-E survive?

As far as I know, there is no way to save ED-E, but if you gather all the upgrades (and get the ED-Ecated achievement) – you can add some new features to the ED-E at Primm. Many prefer don’t like Lonesome Road, but it is my favorite DLC.
