What muscles does the YTWL work?
This exercise targets the anterior [front] deltoids. Extend your arms straight out to the side to form a “T.” This variation hits the trapezius, medial [middle] and posterior [rear] deltoids, balancing the anterior work from the “Y” movement.
What does YTWL stand for?
YTWL may look like a strange acronym but think more along the lines of the “YMCA” dance – your arms will form the shape of the letters Y, T, W and L. For this exercise, do 10 reps each of the four different movements. You don’t put the weights down until all 40 reps are completed.

Wall angels are performed by placing your butt, back, and head against the wall, then slowly gliding your arms up and down the wall in a “V” to “W” pattern. Research has shown postural exercise intervention can help improve posture and reduce pain.

This is typically due to stiffness in the back, chest, and shoulder muscles. It can also be due to stiffness in the hip flexors. Decreasing the range of motion and not reaching as high until your flexibility improves can combat this.
How often should I do Wall Angels?
This is a simple but effective exercise which you can do daily. Try 3 sets of 10 which you can space throughout the day to help keep you moving and mobile. If you are very tight in the shoulders and can’t keep them against the wall you can begin the exercise with the elbows and arms slightly forward off the wall.

Duffin recommends using the ShouldeRok three times per week to see the greatest benefit. We found we couldn’t really use it too often. That’s not necessarily a suggestion to use it 365 days a year, but don’t be afraid to use it multiple times every week. Your shoulders will thank you for it.
