What does a genital herpes outbreak look like? Genital herpes outbreaks usually look like a cluster of itchy or painful blisters filled with fluid. They may be different sizes and appear in different places. The blisters break or turn into sores that bleed or ooze a whitish fluid.

Herpes looks like white, yellow, or red translucent sores or bumps, filled with a clear liquid, whereas pimples are pink or red and are not see-through. While pimples may appear individually as well as in clusters but in recognizable patterns, herpes sores are primarily observed in a bunch.

There are two phases, latent and prodrome.

  • Latent phase: Infection has occurred, but there are no symptoms.

The first signs may include:

  • Itching, tingling, or burning feeling in the vaginal or anal area.
  • Flu-like symptoms, including fever.
  • Swollen glands.
  • Pain in the legs, buttocks, or vaginal area.
  • A change in vaginal discharge.
  • Headache.
  • Painful or difficult urination.
  • A feeling of pressure in the area below the stomach.

Can herpes look like small cuts?

These classic lesions of genital herpes often resemble small pimples or blisters that eventually crust over and finally scab like a small cut. These lesions may take anywhere from two to four weeks to heal fully.

In women and people with female reproductive tracts, herpes lesions can appear on the vulva, perineum, buttocks, anal area, cervix, and inside of the vagina (6), and some people may experience spotting and vaginal discharge (7).
