Why is my check scanner light red?

What makes a check unreadable?
In most cases, scanner malfunctions are caused by hard-to-read documents, such as those checks with weak or no magnetic ink, crumpled, folded or otherwise physically damaged checks, and misaligned MICR character spacing. Sometimes, however, it could be something as simple as an improper feed by the user.
Why can’t the ATM read my check?
The most common reason is that the account and routing number has not been encoded with magnetic ink. The ATM is not able to read checks printed on machines that do not use magnetic ink, such as home printers.
