What are NPT plugs?

National pipe thread (NPT) plugs are designed to fit in many standard threaded pipes. Whether you need to protect piping during finishing work, transport, storage or installation in the field, Caplugs has a solution for you.

What is a hex plug?

Hex plug is an important pipe fitting. Like a normal pipe plug, the hex pipe plug is threaded in the end and the cover or the top of the plug takes a hexagon shape. The hex pipe plugs are considered an easy and cost effective way to plug your pipe. The basic purpose is to stop the flow.

What size is NPT?

NPT is defined by ANSI/ASME standard B1. 20.1. The taper rate for all NPT threads is 1 inch of diameter in 16 inches of length ( 3⁄4 inch per foot or 62.5 millimeters per meter) measured by the change of diameter (of the pipe thread) over distance of thread.

Are pipe plugs tapered?

These plugs can only be installed into tapered NPT or NPTF threaded holes. 3/4” taper is the standard taper for NPT pipe threads. Plugs with these threads are not designed to install flush to the surrounding surface.

What is Hex bushing?

Hex bushings are used to reduce the size of female threads from a larger to a smaller diameter. Hex Bushings are threaded fittings that have male threads on the outside and female threads on the inside with a hex head used to tighten the fitting into the threaded opening. Sizes are Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) – size chart.

Is NPT thread tapered?

NPT has a tapered male and female thread which seals with Teflon tape or jointing compound. Pipe threads used in hydraulic circuits can be divided into two types: Jointing threads are pipe threads for joints made pressure tight by sealing on the threads and are taper external and parallel or taper internal threads.

What is a thread bushing?

A threaded insert, also known as a threaded bushing, is a fastener element that is inserted into an object to add a threaded hole.

Is NPT male or female?

How do I know what size NPT I have?

To determine the NPT size, with a caliper, measure the diameter of the 2nd or 3rd thread on your pipe, fitting or valve as shown below. Find the caliper measurement in the chart and cross reference the nominal NPT pipe size. Don’t get confused, the actual measurement is not the same as the NPT pipe size.

What is NPT size?

Do NPT fittings need sealant?

While NPT and NPTF thread forms are almost identical, NPT is a general-purpose thread that requires thread sealant for a leakproof seal, and you need to choose the sealant thoughtfully. NPTF creates a strong, leakproof mechanical seal without using a sealant.

What is a hex bushing?

Hex bushings are used to reduce the size of female threads from a larger to a smaller diameter. Hex Bushings are threaded fittings that have male threads on the outside and female threads on the inside with a hex head used to tighten the fitting into the threaded opening.

Why do you use helicoils?

HELICOIL® is the preferred choice of many leading engineers worldwide who need to strengthen, reinforce or repair screw threads in soft alloy components. HELICOIL® inserts ensure high-strength threads, transferring forces from flank to flank into the holding thread.

How is NPT size measured?

What does NPT stand for in piping?

National Pipe Tapered Thread
In America, William Sellers set the standard for nuts, bolts, and screws which became the National Pipe Tapered Thread (NPT) in 1864. His 60 degree thread angle, in common use by early American clockmakers, enabled the American Industrial Revolution. These thread forms later became the American National Standard.

How do I stop my NPT thread from leaking?

  1. Use two types of Teflon pipe joint compound on threaded joints. Wrap threads with plumbers tape.
  2. Tighten the connection.
  3. Thread on valve pipe joint compound.
  4. Tighten the fitting.
  5. Align slip joints precisely for a tight seal.
  6. Choose flexible supply tubes.
  7. Close-up of gasket.
