Is intraspinal the same as intrathecal?

THE term intraspinal refers to the spaces or potential spaces surrounding the spinal cord or the nerve roots that constitute the cauda equina. Most often, the term is used when referring to the epidural and intrathecal spaces, each of which offers a route of administration for medications.

What is intraspinal route of administration?

Intraspinal drug delivery provides agents directly to their site of action. These sites, receptors within the spinal cord, are bound to a greater degree when drugs are administered intraspinally.

What is an intraspinal catheter?

The placement of an intrathecal catheter is a minimally invasive procedure aimed at releasing drugs directly into the subarachnoid space for the control of pain in cancer and non-cancer conditions, and for managing severe spasticity in adults and children.

What is the difference between intrathecal and epidural?

Intrathecal administration is delivered directly into the CSF and into the superifical spinal cord; epidural administration diffuses through the dura into the CSF, and thus has a slower onset of action.

Why is methotrexate given Intrathecally?

Methotrexate is a chemotherapy drug that is used to treat certain types of cancer and leukaemia. When given intrathecally, it prevents leukaemia cells entering the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) around the spine and brain.

When is intraspinal access used?

It is used to treat refractory pain in patients with cancer, autoimmune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), and/or chronic pain (Staats et al, 2004). Adverse effects include dizziness, nausea, asthenia, somnolence, diarrhea, confusion, and ataxia (Rauck et al, 2006).

Is intrathecal and epidural the same?

An intrathecal is a type of spinal anesthetic. A single dose of local anesthetic (numbing medication) is given through a needle placed into the lower back. Unlike an epidural, an intrathecal is a single dose of medication and isn’t repeated.

Is intrathecal the same as epidural?

Where is an intrathecal catheter placed?

The catheter runs beneath the skin from the intrathecal space in the space around to the front of the chest where it is attached to the port. Since the entire device is placed under the skin, the risk of infection is greatly reduced.

Where an intrathecal injection is administered?

Once your skin is numb, the anesthesiologist places a special needle into your back and into the spinal space. This space is just outside the spinal cord. He or she will inject the medicine into this space.

How do you insert an intrathecal catheter?

The port is usually implanted under the skin on the chest. Attached to the base of the port is a narrow flexible tube, called a catheter. The catheter runs beneath the skin from the intrathecal space in the space around to the front of the chest where it is attached to the port.

When is intrathecal injection used?

Intrathecal administration is a route of administration for drugs via an injection into the spinal canal, or into the subarachnoid space so that it reaches the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and is useful in spinal anesthesia, chemotherapy, or pain management applications.

What drugs are given intrathecally?

Currently there are only three medications approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use via the intrathecal route, ie, morphine, ziconotide, and baclofen. Morphine targets opioid receptors within the dorsal horn.
