Does a denim quilt need batting?

Quilt batting can make the project even heavier so consider omitting it entirely. You can make the quilt a bit lighter by using a regular cotton quilting fabric for the quilt backing, rather than denim.

What is the best backing for a denim quilt?

Denim quilts are heavy, so think about the quilt’s end use beforehand. If it’s going to be a bed quilt, you might want to go with a really lightweight backing like a double gauze, a shot, lawn, or some other lightweight cotton. I’ve mostly backed mine with a fine Indian block-printed cotton.

  8. Bind the quilt.

Use a Longer Stitch: Straight Stitching: For general sewing, on my machine I use a 2.2 stitch length. On denim I like to use a 2.8-3 stitch length.

Can normal sewing machines sew denim?

If you are just sewing denim which is lightweight then your regular sewing machine with the right needles, thread and technique will do a great job. But if you will be sewing denim regularly or sewing heavy denim, then consider purchasing a heavy-duty sewing machine with a strong interior frame and more powerful motor.
