How many t-shirts do I need for a throw-size quilt?

12 shirts will make a throw-size quilt, approx. 48″ x 64″ – 3 across x 4 down. 30 shirts will make a full size quilt, approx. 82″ x 96″ – 5 across x 6 down.

What interfacing do you use for T-shirt blankets?

For t-shirt quilting, we recommend using a lightweight fusible interfacing such as Pellon Shape-Flex® (woven) or Therm-o-Web Heat’n Bond (non-woven). If you find a different brand at your fabric store, just make sure it is light weight and won’t stretch out of shape, and you’ll be good to go.

Do I need interfacing for a T-shirt blanket?

Answer: No interfacing! There were a lot of “rules” I didn’t know about making T-shirt quilts. Such as: Iron-on interfacing should be ironed onto each T-shirt before it’s cut to its final size. All the blocks need to be the same size.

What is the best size for a Tshirt quilt?

A good size is 15” x 15” or 16” x 16” … remember the sewn square will be a 1/2″ smaller on all sides because of a half inch seam allowance. You can do bigger or smaller squares (if you have lots of t-shirts, you have the option to do smaller squares so that the quilt doesn’t get too big).

What kind of stabilizer do you use on T-shirt quilt?

Light-weight, iron-on interfacing such as Pellon 911FF featherweight or Therm-o-Web Heat’n Bond. Either woven or non-woven interfacing will work fine.

What kind of batting should I use for a Tshirt quilt?

The best types of batting are 80% cotton/20% polyester needle punched or 100% cotton. These two types of batting are thin and the perfect weight to keep you warm.

How many shirts do you need to make a Tshirt blanket?

12 shirts will make a throw-size quilt, approx. 48″ x 64″ – 3 across x 4 down. 30 shirts will make a full size quilt, approx. 82″ x 96″ – 5 across x 6 down.

What backing should I use for T-shirt quilt?

Choose a printed backing material when a T-shirt quilt is hand tied or machine tacked. These methods will each leave just a small 1/4” or less stitch on the back of the quilt. The entire back of the quilt will be speckled with these small stitches. These stitches will get lost in the design of a printed material.

What is the best stabilizer for Tshirt quilts?

Can I use flannel instead of batting?

A flannel sheet is a good alternative. You can also use a flannel sheet for the batting of a traditional quilt, but check first to make sure the pattern doesn’t show through the top or backing. For an even lighter weight, you can use a regular sheet.
