What are infinitive activities?

Each piece of paper has a verb. Students take turns picking a piece of paper out of the bag, and once they have the verb they get exactly 30 seconds to come up with a sentence that uses the verb in its infinitive form. If a student fails to come up with a correct sentence, the other student gets a chance to try it.

When discussing grammar, the full infinitive (e.g., “to play”) is used to name the verb. The verb to play has the participles playing and played. In the present tense, to be has the forms “am,” “is,” and “are.”

Instruct your students to include at least once sentence each of where the infinitives either express purpose, act as a subject, follow an adjective, are used with an auxiliary, make a judgment, contain question words, and include the phrase “had better”.

How do you teach gerunds and infinitives to ESL students?

Provide a few verbs and tell the students to use each one as an infinitive or gerund in different ways (i.e. a gerund as a subject, an infinitive as a complement, etc.). While students are writing their sentences, the teacher can go around the class and check the work to see where there may be problems or confusion.

Why do we use to infinitive?

Do infinitives always start with TO?

An infinitive will almost always begin with to. Exceptions do occur, however. For example, an infinitive will lose its to when it follows these verbs: feel, hear, help, let, make, see, and watch. Between the verb and the infinitive, you will find a direct object.

What is the difference between to infinitive and gerund?

Gerunds and infinitives can replace a noun in a sentence. Gerund = the present participle (-ing) form of the verb, e.g., singing, dancing, running. Infinitive = to + the base form of the verb, e.g., to sing, to dance, to run.
