When Should bees use Apiguard?

A: Apiguard can be applied at any time of day but for best results treat colonies in the late afternoon or evening when the temperature is lower and the bees are in or returning to, the hive.

How effective is Apiguard?

A: Apiguard often gives results as good as those obtained previously with Apistan or Bayvarol, but a lower efficacy should be generally expected, somewhere between 85 – 95% varroa control. The average we have recorded through thousands of hive treatments is 93%. Apiguard works better the warmer it is, up to 100°F.

Can I use Apiguard with supers on?

Q: Should I use Apiguard when supers are on the hive? A: It is preferable to remove supers before treating with Apiguard. Apiguard may taint honey in supers, but it is unlikely, especially if the honey stores are sealed. Apiguard may taint the brood wax, and low traces may reach the wax of the supers.

How much Apiguard do I need?

Use 2 doses of 25g Apiguard, one week apart instead of 2 x 50g at two weeks apart. A third 25g dose is sometimes used after the second week where mite infestations are high.

Can you use Apiguard in the winter?

Apiguard works best in temperatures above 15°C. But it is also effective at lower temperatures even though the gel takes longer to evaporate and the gel needs to be left I place for longer.

Where should Apiguard be placed?

A: Apiguard works better by placing it on top of the brood box because the worker bees go up to the gel, pick it up and drag it down through the brood box to the entrance, where they try to throw it out – this is normal cleaning behaviour. However, by the time the bees get to the hive entrance.

Where do I put Apiguard in hive?

Is Apiguard natural?

WHAT IS APIGUARD? Apiguard is a natural product to control varroa in honeybee colonies. Tests show that it also helps to control tracheal mites and chalkbrood.

Can you eat honey after Apivar treatment?

The only catch is that you shouldn’t use it if it’s still above 80F in the daytime and you still cannot consume the honey or beeswax that was on the hive during the treatment. If it’s Fall and you need to treat, but don’t want to remove honey supers, the best way to get rid of mites is with oxalic acid.

Does Apivar taint honey?

Apivar is a miticide that kills Varroa mites without leaving significant residues in honey or wax.

Can I use Apiguard in winter?

Does Apivar contaminate wax?

What is Apivar and how does it work? Apivar is a miticide that kills Varroa mites without leaving significant residues in honey or wax.

What happens if you leave Apivar strips in too long?

If you leave the strips in too long every time you treat, over and over again, the low level exposure might result in mites that are resistant to that miticide.

Can I eat honey treated with Apivar?

Can you feed bees while treating with Apivar?

Can I treat a hive with Apivar when feeding my bees? Yes, Apivar does not interfere with feeding in any way (unlike thymol-based products). In fact, feeding increases activity in the colony and therefore increases the spread of active ingredient throughout the hive.

What happens if you leave Apivar in too long?

Can you leave Apivar strips in all winter?

To avoid encouraging the development of resistance, do not leave the strips in place throughout the winter season. Remove honey supers before applying Apivar. Hang each strip between 2 comb frames in the brood area or the bee cluster, with a minimum distance of 2 frames between strips.
