Is the Ford 400M a good motor?

A well maintained 400 can last as good as any Ford engine. When Ford first started installing them in cars and trucks they unfortunately didn’t live very long in my area. The locals were used to regularly winding up their Windsor small blocks and their big blocks with no problems.

Is there a 400M Ford engine?

Breaking in the Ford 400M Engine Equipped with the stock two-barrel intake and Holley carb, the 400M produced peak numbers of 265 hp at 4,100 rpm and 412 lb-ft at 2,900 rpm. Torque production from the 400M exceeded 400 lb-ft from below 2,000 rpm (we didn’t load it lower than 2,000 rpm) to 3,200 rpm.

Did Ford make a 400 modified?

The Ford 400 was introduced along with the 351 Modified in 1971. The 400 was used in many applications over the years.

Is a Ford 400 a big block or small block?

The 400 was intended as a replacement for Ford’s aging big-block designs. The block’s architecture borrowed heavily from the Cleveland, including the bore spacing, but 1.09 inches of additional deck height were added to allow a 4.00-inch stroke and the potential for plenty of torque.

What’s the difference between a 351M and 400?

To compensate for the shorter stroke the pistons for the 351M have a taller compression height so that it could use the same connecting rods as the 400. The result of the 351M using the longer 400 connecting rod was a higher connecting rod-to-stroke ratio of 1.88:1 than the 351C and 400’s of 1.65:1.

What is the difference between a Ford 351M and 400?

The Ford 400 engine was based on the 351 Cleveland. It had a half-inch (12.7 mm) longer stroke than the 351 Cleveland, making it the longest-stroke Ford pushrod V8 engine. The 400 had “square” proportions, with a 4.0 in (102 mm) bore and stroke.

Did Ford ever make a 400 big block?

Ford took the 400 engine’s tall-deck block and de-stroked it with a shorter 3.5 in (89 mm) stroke crankshaft to produce a 351 cubic inch (5.8 L) engine. This crankshaft was not the same as a 351C, in that it used the larger 3.0 in (76 mm) main bearing journals of the 400 V8.

How much HP does a 400 small block have?

401 hp
In case you missed the story, the best power numbers were gained with a set of GM Performance Parts Vortec heads supplied by Scoggin-Dickey, and even then the 400 small block Chevy managed only 401 hp and 458 lb-ft of torque. We were underwhelmed.

Is a 400 Pontiac motor a big block or a small block?

Ford 332 (5.4 litre) Interceptor big block V8. A Chevrolet Camaro 396 had a big block, but a Pontiac Firebird 400 did not. Buick and Oldsmobile 455s were big blocks, but a Pontiac 455 was not. A Chevrolet 348 was a big block, but a Chevrolet 350 was a small block.

What is a 351 modified 400 engine?

351 Modified It’s based on the 400 Modified engine (see note on nomenclature in the opening paragraph), which was essentially a 351C with a longer stroke. Unlike the 351C however, the 400 blocks had the bellhousing bolt pattern of 385-series big blocks. It also had a higher deck height to accommodate the longer stroke.

Is Pontiac 455 and 400 the same block?

Functionally, these blocks are very much the same, with only minor structural differences, and virtually all were drilled and tapped for four-bolt caps (though only the 19701972 455 H.O. engines were equipped with them).
