How do EQ snare drums live?

Start with rolling off the extreme lows so that the snare isn’t interfering with your kick and sub bass. Somewhere around 80hz should do the trick. Next add a gentle boost around 7kHz and high shelf around 12kHz to let the snare cut through. Lastly add a boost around 200-250hz for the body of the snare.

What Hz is kick drum?

Kick drums can be tuned to have a fundamental frequency as low as 50 Hz and as high at 80 or 90 Hz depending on the drum size, the type of drumheads used and the style of music that is being played.

What Hz should my toms be at?

Big floor toms have a fuller sound around 80 – 100 Hz but smaller toms might need to be boosted even higher, around 100 – 200 Hz. Sweep along the lower frequencies with a wide bell curve, or a shelving boost until you find the frequency that compliments the tom.

What frequency should a floor tom be?

Low end is important as well for a great tom sound. For floor toms I tend to boost around 80hz and for rack toms I recommend boosting anywhere from 100-120hz. Compression on toms is used so we add more punch to this instrument.

Should you EQ snare?

Changing the EQ on the hi-hat can alter how the snare sounds. Brightening up the kick may make the snare sound dull. So EQ the snare in the perspective of the whole kit, and you’ll find it much easier to get it right.

Should I gate my toms?

Gates destroy drums. It’s a harsh truth, but there’s no way a gate can accommodate the attack, sustain & release of every tom or snare hit without some quality loss. On one end, you’re fighting with attack times & making sure you’ve found the sweet spot for your threshold.
