Are deer in rut right now?
As we noted in last year’s rut predictions, multiple scientific studies have found that 90 percent of adult whitetail does in North America will be in estrus and breed between November 5 to 20.
What are the phases of the rut?

The rut tends to last somewhere between 20 and 45 days. This varies on latitude, which affects the timing of spring and autumn and which can give elk a longer calving season and a longer rut.

Because of this, an estrus doe typically gets attention from bucks for a two- to three-day span of time. Also worth noting, is that most bucks will chase off the doe’s fawns while tending her.
Why do deer seem to disappear?
Virtually every deer makes at least subtle shifts in their patterns throughout the year. But approximately half of all bucks have summer ranges that don’t overlap with their fall ones. So the most likely explanation for a missing buck is it has simply relocated.

ANSWER: Under normal conditions, a deer can smell a human that is not making any attempt to hide its odor at least 1/4 mile away. If the scenting conditions are perfect (humid with a light breeze), it can even be farther.
Why does the rut happen the same time every year?
The rut happens the same time every year because it has to – especially throughout much of the range where whitetails live and actual seasons (like winter) happen. Fawns need to hit the ground at the right time in the late-spring, otherwise they don’t do so well. Mother Nature knows this, and so forget about an early or late rut.

The 2021 Rut Mountain Runs are SOLD OUT. There will be no waitlists. If you had priority registration or wanted to defer from the 2020 Rut, but did not claim your deferral in time, you have missed your window. You will again have the opportunity in early January of 2022.

Does the rut happen when the Moon is full?
Keep in mind that even during a full moon and 75-degree beach-type days, the rut happens. It’s just that most of the good stuff will likely occur after the sun has gone down and we are out of the woods.
