Is it OK to wild camp on Dartmoor?
It is a well-known fact that wild camping is free and legal on Dartmoor. However, it is not so well known that there are still many areas of the National Park in which camping is prohibited.
Do you need permission to camp on Dartmoor?
Wild camping is only legal in England if you have asked for the landowner’s permission, as most land is privately owned, with one exception. Dartmoor National Park is the only place in England where wild camping is officially permitted – but there are still some restrictions to be aware of before you set up camp.
Can you camp overnight on Dartmoor?
You can backpack camp on some parts of Dartmoor. This is by carrying your own equipment as part of your walk and staying one or two nights max. Animals will eat them or smaller wildlife will get stuck inside them, in both cases this can be fatal. Please bag your dog poo and take it home with you, we don’t provide dog bins. You can hang the bag on your rear wiper or tow hitch to take it home ‘odour free’.

Where can I Go Wild camping in the Two Moors?
The Bellever/Riddon Ridge area is also a very beautiful spot that lies beside the River Dart, and there are toilets close by at the Forestry Commission car park. If you’re walking the Two Moors Way, we would recommend wild camping at Ugborough Moor.
