Are spiked closing wheels worth it?
The spike closing wheels help the most when planting in wet conditions, reducing the amount of sidewall compaction. The danger of spike wheels is under drier conditions when we either get dry soil down in the seed trench and/or don’t get enough firming action around the seed.
What is a closing wheel?
Conventional rubber closing wheels force the furrow closed from the top, while spiked closing wheels pinch the bottom of the seed trench while keeping the soil above it loose. They also crumble the sidewall, preventing sidewall compaction.
How far apart should closing wheels be?
It is important to note that closing wheels be properly set at ¾ to 1 inch distance apart between wheels for sugarbeets and that the wheels are centered directly over the top of the planted row and also set at a proper down pressure.

What do gauge wheels on a planter do?
When it comes to depth gauge wheels, many new modern styles allow for planting in moisture conditions conventional gauge wheels will not operate. The style of these is a farmer preference, but the goal is to maintain uniform planting depth and minimize bounce of the row unit.
When should I replace my wheel gauges?
If you run out of room to adjust between the disk opener and the gauge wheel, it may be time to replace your gauge wheel. Why do we say that? The inner side of the gauge wheel rubber is going to be wearing on that disk opener. You may get to a point where you lose the ability to adjust and correct it.
