Do I need short medium or long cage rear derailleur?

It’s generally best to go for as short a derailleur cage as you can get away with, as long as you can avoid the chain contorting on the extremes of the cassette, such as using the largest on both sprocket and chainring. Smaller cages tend to have snappier gear changes, they’re lighter, and also less exposed to damage.

What is long cage rear derailleur?

Long cage derailleur It is most often used for 27 or 30 gears combinations and is recommended especially for Cross Country and Marathon competitions to pick up excess chain when using small ratios (small chainrings – small sprockets).

Can you make a short cage derailleur into a long cage?

Yes, if the derailleurs are the same model, and you can get all the parts, (which isn’t usually a straightforward process) youcan convert from short cage to long cage. That’s assuming that the rest of the derailleur is constructed the same way, which is not guaranteed.

Can a 10 speed derailleur work on a 9 speed cassette?

Shimano 10 speed derailleur will work on a 9 speed cassette with a sram 9 speed shifter.

Does Cage length affect chain length?

Cage length doesn’t impact the chain length, but a longer cage can help with a small-small. Because the longer cage pulls the chain further back the derailleur is less likely to fold on itself in extreme ratio situations.

What is the difference between short and long rear derailleur?

The difference is in the amount of chain (number of chain links) you can accommodate. Using larger gears (sprockets/cogs) will require more chain (more chain links) for the same bike. A longer derailleur cage can “take up more slack” in the chain.

Can you use a long cage derailleur on a small cassette?

The long cage derailleur should not be an issue when going to a smaller size big gear in the back (i.e. 30 or 28 vs. 32). Some people say that when using a long cage derailleur with smaller cogs in the back the shifting is less “crisp”, but that most likely will not be noticeable unless you really were looking for it.

Are derailleur cages interchangeable?

Yes, it is possible to convert your Ultegra SS rear derailleur to a GS rear derailleur.

Can I use 11-speed shifter with 9 speed cassette?

Nope. Above 6 (or 7, can’t remember which) speeds the spacing of the sprockets gets narrower as the number of sprockets increases. So, you can’t use a cassette with a mismatched number of sprockets – at least not for the full range of the cassette. A 10 speed cassette would work slightly better.

How do I change my 11-speed to 9 speed?

Converting a 9-speed wheel to 11-speed You will have to buy a new 11-speed wheel and replace the entire wheel. On the other hand, if your current wheel is an 11-speed wheel, you can convert it to 11-speed by removing the low spacer from the low side of the 9-speed sprocket and installing an 11-speed sprocket.

Whats the difference between SGS and GS derailleur?

GS is the medium length cage and SGS is the long cage on the rear derailleur, if you ride a hardtail (and you don’t cross chain) then a GS will do, An SGS is better suited to a full suss as the chain growth needs to be taken up by the RD…

What happens if my bike chain is too long?

A chain that’s too long (loose) may cause dropped chains and/or inconsistent shifting — front and back shifting. A chain that’s too short (tight) can cause even bigger problems. Hopefully the bike just won’t shift into the largest cog or to the big ring …

Can you change the cage on a rear derailleur?

Yes, it is possible to convert your Ultegra SS rear derailleur to a GS rear derailleur. We have done this switch in my shop to get a wider gear range on a new Dura-Ace Di2-equipped bicycle, by switching parts between Ultegra and Dura-Ace Di2 rear derailleurs.
