The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and International Maritime Organization (IMO) have the challenge of reducing global emissions from their respective sectors. Shipping and aviation are not directly included in the Paris Agreement.

As the name suggests, CORSIA is a global offsetting scheme, whereby airlines and other aircraft operators will offset any growth in CO2 emissions above 2020 levels.
How much CO2 does the UK aviation industry produce?
UK aviation sector emissions in 2018 were 39.3 MtCO2e/yr. We have also estimated UK aviation emissions for 2019 at 39.6 MtCO2e/year, a 0.9% increase on 2018 levels. This combines 11% falls in domestic and military emissions with a 1.7% increase in international aviation emissions.

Does aviation contribute to global warming?
Aviation emissions are 2.1% of the global share, but when non-CO2 effects are included, aviation contributes an estimated 4.9% to the global warming problem. Hence, the global aviation sector must have both zero CO2 emissions and zero non-CO2 effects on the climate by the end of the century.
What is CORSIA known for?
CORSIA is a global scheme which will result in greater levels of CO2 mitigation in international aviation than could be achieved through domestic policy measures. It is forecast that CORSIA will stabilize net CO2 emissions from international aviation at around about 600 million tonnes of CO2.
