How do you read a Canon lens code?

The first two numbers, “09”, is the month number the lens was manufactured in. Month 02 is February, month 11 = November. The leading zero of the month code is sometimes omitted. The next two numbers, “02”, are meaningless in determining how old a Canon lens is.

What do the letters on Canon lenses mean?

I, II, III – Roman numerals in the lens name describe the lens’ generation. For example, there are two Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lenses: the first one is the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM, and the other one is Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM.

What is EF-S and EF M?

The EF-M lenses are designed for the new mirrorless camera system, and mount much closer to the sensor than the EF-S lenses (which are designed for DSLRs with a mirror box).

What do the letters on a lens mean?

Your camera lens may or may not have the “mm” printed on it. You will see a number, a slash, and another number (# / #). The second number is the focal length. A lens stamped 1.8 / 55 means that the focal length is a fixed 55mm. Prime lenses have only one focal length, while zoom lenses have a range of focal lengths.

What does EF-S mean for Canon lenses?

Electro-focus short back focus
EF-S stands for Electro-focus short back focus. This Canon lens mount was launched alongside the EOS 300D (EOS digital Rebel) camera in 2003. EF-S lenses have an image circle which just covers the sensor of APS-C cameras, meaning that the image circle is smaller in size than in EF lenses.

Can I use EF-M on EF?

This Canon EF-M Mount Adapter lets any EF or EF-S lens mount and work perfectly on EOS-M cameras. It works with all Canon autofocus lenses made since 1987. I tried with a 1980s EF 50mm f/1.8 which worked perfectly, as well as the classic EF 35mm f/1.4 L and the hot new EF 24-70mm f/4 IS.

What does f2 8 lens mean?

With the lenses you mention, the f2. 8 lens has an aperture which allows twice the light of the f4 lens and allows you to make an image in half the light or make an image at a lower ISO or with a shorter shutter speed in the same light.

Are all EF lenses full frame?

Canon EF lenses are designed to work with full frame and APS-C DSLRs from Canon. Canon EF-S lenses have a smaller image circle that is only big enough to cover the smaller sensor found on Canon APS-C cameras.

Will EF-M fit EOS R?

All EF and EF-S lenses can be used by attaching the optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. The camera cannot be used with EF-M lenses.

Is F2 8 or f4 better?

An f/2.8 lens will give you twice the shutter speed of an f/4 lens when shooting with the aperture wide open. If you find yourself photographing moving people or other moving subjects, where fast shutter speeds are critical, then the f/2.8 is probably the right way to go.
