How much ribbon is needed for a pillowcase dress?

Pillowcase dresses are so easy a beginner can make one. Buy one yard of 42″ – 45″ sturdy fabric, and 2.5 yards of 1″ wide grosgrain ribbon for each dress you plan to make. All dresses are made from the full width of the fabric. I used a full yard for the dresses I made.

How are pillow cases measured?

What size do pillowcase dresses fit?

Since Pillowcase dresses are designed to grow with the girl, the patterns tend to be “one-size-fits-all.” I wanted my pillowcase dress to fit a bit better, so I created three different pattern sizes: 2t to 5, 6 to 10 and 12 to 16. (See the version I just sewed for a 14 to 16 girl here and my adult version here .)

How do I know what size to make my dress?

If you’re not sure what size to make, measure your “model” and go by the length you want the dress to be. Most fabric is 44″ wide, that is why all of the pieces are 21″ wide, this will allow you to cut 2 pieces of fabric at the same time with minimal waste.

Is this the easiest way to make a pillowcase dress?

This truly is the easiest way to make a pillowcase dress EVER. Since originally posting this tutorial, I’ve come up with a cutting and sizing chart to make it easier to figure out fabric for different sizes. I get lots of questions about what the width of fabric means.

How much seam allowance do I need to make a dress?

All seam allowances are ½″ unless otherwise noted. Cut out your pieces using the size chart above. The length is the length of the dress from shoulder down plus the 2-3″ band at the bottom of the dress. If you’re not sure what size to make, measure your “model” and go by the length you want the dress to be.
