Is codeine an antitussive agent?

Codeine is one of the centrally acting narcotic opioids approved for use as an antitussive, a prodrug that is bioactivated by CYP2D6 into morphine in the liver. The opioid effects of codeine are related to plasma morphine concentrations.

What are antitussives drugs used for?

An antitussive is a medication often recommended for the treatment of cough and associated respiratory tract disorders.

How do opioid antitussives work?

Opioid analgesics bind to opioid receptors in the central nervous system, thus inhibiting pain pathways. In addition, these agents cause cough suppression by direct central action in the medulla.

Are antitussives over-the-counter?

There are 2 types of OTC cough medicines: antitussives and expectorants. A common antitussive is dextromethorphan (some brand names: Triaminic Cold and Cough, Robitussin Cough, Vicks 44 Cough and Cold). The only expectorant available in OTC products is guaifenesin (2 brand names: Mucinex, Robitussin Chest Congestion).

Do antitussives work?

Antitussives are medicines that suppress coughing, also known as cough suppressants. Antitussives are thought to work by inhibiting a coordinating region for coughing located in the brain stem, disrupting the cough reflex arc; although the exact mechanism of action is unknown.

Are antitussives narcotic?

Several agents (eg, codeine, guaifenesin, dextromethorphan) are intended for the symptomatic relief of cough.

Does Vicks Formula 44 have codeine in it?

Some cough and cold medicines contain codeine, promethazine, dextromethorphan (DXM) and other narcotics that can make people feel high or relaxed. Common brands include Tylenol-Codeine Elixir, Robitussin, Phenergan, Dimetapp DM, Nyquil, Robitussin, Theraflu and Vick’s Formula 44.

Are antitussives effective?

First-generation antitussives in combination with oral decongestants are recommended by the American College of Chest Physicians Evidence Based Guidelines for the treatment of cough in common cold and in the so-called upper airway cough syndrome.

How many days should I take antitussive?

This medication is for temporary use only. Do not take this medication for more than 7 days unless your doctor tells you to do so. Tell your doctor if your condition lasts longer than 7 days. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember.
