Why is United PetSafe suspended?
In a statement posted Tuesday on the company’s website, United said it was temporarily halting its PetSafe program in order to “make improvements” that will better protect the safety of animals traveling as cargo on its planes.
Does United Airlines require a pet health certificate?
United Airlines’ dog travel policy requires all dogs to have a health certificate and proof of rabies vaccination from their vet. Ensure your dog is vaccinated against rabies well in advance, as they won’t be able to travel for 30 days after their last rabies shot.
Can I fly my pet on United?
In-cabin pets are domesticated cats and dogs that can fit in a travel carrier underneath the seat in front of you. Pets can’t be in-cabin on flights to, from or through Hawaii and these international locations, but they are allowed in-cabin on select United flights.

As above, I’d call ahead, then book on-line, then quickly call to add your dog to your reservation. American does keep a log of in-cabin pets for a particular flight, so once your pet is attached to your reservation, she has a place on board. You’ll pay for her at the airport.

So there’s good news on that front — United is suspending their PetSafe program. Specifically, they are suspending new PetSafe reservations while they review their service. Those with existing PetSafe reservations have the option of canceling them at no cost. United expects the review to be complete by May 1, 2018.
