What is a post mount disc brake?

Post mounts are welded tabs that have internal threading. The brake screws right into the mount in the frame. You get adaptors to account for the size of the rotor. These were designed for mountain bikes, so you can get adapters to work with rotors from 160 mm to 203 mm.

What is the difference between flat mount and post mount disc brakes?

Flat-mount is a newer road-specific disc brake mount and is more compact and lighter than post-mount. With flat-mount, the rear caliper is affixed with two bolts running through a flattened frame surface and then threading directly into the caliper (or adapter affixed to the caliper).

What does post mount mean?

Post mount places two threaded M6x1 holes 74mm apart on the frame or fork in the orientation that a caliper can be bolted to directly without any adapter, or with a post-mount adapter in between along with its supplied long bolts if a larger rotor is going to be used.

Is Mount Post Mount difference?

Post mount is two bolt holes that bolt into the fork parrallel to the wheel. IS mount is two bolt holes where the bolts go at 90 degrees to the wheel (which is what I suspect your J2s are).

How long do hydraulic disc brakes last?

Your mileage will vary based on weather, braking habits, pad type, riding style and terrain. But you should normally get 500-700miles from a resin pad, and 1000-1250 miles from a sintered metal pad. I had no idea that disk pads wore out so quickly.

Can I use flat mount calipers on a post mount frame?

A.S. Solutions offers a few adapters that allow you to fit a flat mount caliper on a post or IS frame. There are limitations though. First, you have to have the clearance on your frame. Second, the IS adapter only works with 180 mm rotors in the front and 160 mm in the back.

Do hydraulic disc brakes need maintenance?

The regularity will depend on a few things including the amount of use, however, as a rough guide, a yearly service is advisable. Bleeding hydraulic brakes can be tricky, especially if you’ve never done so before, and with each brand there normally comes a slightly different process.

Can I use post mount on flat mount?

If you’re going to use the adapters plus the post mount calipers, that job should still be done. Any brand of adapter for post mount calipers on a flat mount frame should do the job.
