What is Iberogast used for?
Iberogast® relaxes stomach muscles relieving cramps, bloating and feelings of pressure. With hypertension of the muscles in the upper stomach, you may experience early satiety or a feeling of fullness.

Iberogast, also known as STW5, is a liquid formulation of nine herbs used for functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome. A proprietary blend, it was developed in Germany in 1961 and is available (without prescription) in other countries.

Iberogast was developed by a German country (Steigerwald Arzneimittelwerk GmbH) and is available without a prescription throughout the world.
Why is Iberogast discontinued?
in January 2020, the Dutch Medicines Evaluation Board discussed the addition of liver toxicity to the SmPC of Iberogast®. It was concluded that there was too little evidence for inclusion of this potentially adverse drug reaction in the SmPC (8).
Can you take Iberogast everyday?
Iberogast® can be taken for as long as you need*. The duration you take Iberogast® for depends on your functional digestive symptoms and how long they last for. If you’re not sure if you should take Iberogast® for a prolonged period of time, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
How long should you take Iberogast for?
There is basically no restriction regarding the duration of use. The duration of intake depends on the nature, severity and course of the disorder. If your symptoms persist, or if the success expected from the administration is not achieved within 7 days, see your healthcare professional.
Does Iberogast raise blood pressure?
A prominent ingredient in Iberogast, licorice root has been reported to bring about fatigue, headaches and high blood pressure in those most sensitive to it.
Can Iberogast cause liver damage?
Despite the general safety of Iberogast®, occasional cases of drug-induced liver injury have been documented.
Does Iberogast help bloating?
Iberogast® is a drug that can be used to relief symptoms like bloating, gases, abdominal pain and cramps, as well as nausea. It has indications for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia, which can often manifest themselves by chronic bloating and gases.
Who should not take Iberogast?
One single dose for adults (20 drops of Iberogast®) contains only 0.24 g of alcohol which is less alcohol than one glass of apple juice of 200 ml contains. Nonetheless, people with a history of alcoholism should refrain from taking Iberogast®.
