What makes an add9 chord?

An added ninth chord is a major triad with an added ninth – Cadd9 consists of C, E, G and D. Added ninth chords differ from other ninth chords because the seventh isn’t included.

Is add9 the same as 9?

Quite simply put: the 9th chord will include a 7 of some form. The add9 chord will only contain the 9 as the extra note in the chord. There are a few different variations off of this, and five of them in total are covered in the animated music theory lesson below.

What is Cadd9 chord called?

The Cadd9 chord includes a color note in addition to the core C major chord. These color notes are referred to in music theory as “extensions”. The actual note being added is hinted at right in the chord name Cadd9 – in addition to the standard C major chord, the 9th note in a C major scale is added.

What is an add9 chord piano?

A Major 9th Piano Chords Add9: An AADD9 is an A triad with an added major ninth interval (no 7th): A – C♯ – E – B.

What is the difference between sus2 and Add9?

Add2 means you add a diatonic second to the triad (usually major, I believe). Sus2 means you omit the third of a triad/chord in favor of the second. A 9 chord is a ninth degree added on top of a seventh chord. An add 9 is a little odd, but I suppose people could use that as a triad with a nine over it and no 7th.

What is the difference between Add2 and Add9?

I’ll use add2 or add4 to indicate closed voicing (within one octave). Add9 or add11 tend to imply voicings beyond one octave but could be interpreted within an octave. That seems pretty intuitive to anyone without a “purist” theoretical axe to grind. The limitations of guitar versus piano will muddy that up though.

How do I use Cadd9?

One of the most common ways to play the Cadd9 chord is in the open position. Start by placing your index finger on the 2nd fret of the D string. Next, place your middle finger on the 3rd fret of the A string, followed by your ring finger on the 3rd fret of the B string.

Did Jimi Hendrix invent a chord?

The Music Theory behind the Hendrix Chord Jimi Hendrix popularised its sound, but he was not the first person to use it, and he certainly didn’t invent it. The 7#9 is a known chord type, and its name has two separate parts that tell us what is actually in it – 7, and #9.

What is Gsus4 guitar?

Sus4 (or just sus) stands for „suspended 4th“. The 3rd of a major or a minor chord is suspended and replaced by a perfect 4th.
