Why does my glow plug light not come on?
If the light doesn’t light up, the glow plug is bad and should be replaced. Easier is to use a professional glow plug tester device. There is some discussion about whether you should only replace the glow plugs that have gone bad, or if it is best to replace them all.
Should glow plug light always come on?
If the glow plug light is staying on for longer than 10 – 15 seconds, it indicates a loss of power. The glow plug is losing its power efficiency and it will need to be changed soon. Neglecting to do so can lead to more serious car issues down the line.
Where is the glow plug fuse located?
In these systems the fuse for the glow plug is located within a separate fuse box attached to the firewall of the car. The fuse can break if there is a short within one of the glow plugs; the fuse will need to be replaced after the glow plug is replaced.
How does glow plug relay work?
The glow plug control unit uses a glow plug relay to switch the current for the glow plugs on and off. The more glow plugs monitored by a control unit, the higher the current the circuit will need. To reduce the current needed, glow plugs are often distributed across two circuits, with two glow plug relays.
How do you know when glow plugs are ready?
Six signs it’s time to replace your glow plugs
- Hard starting. A hard starting engine is the most common indicator of damaged glow plugs.
- Engine misfiring.
- Rough idling.
- Decreased fuel efficiency.
- White smoke.
- Black smoke.
Can you test glow plugs without removing them?
Clamp-meters are probably the best tool for testing glow plugs, because they are easy to use, and can test the complete system at once, without disconnecting anything.
Do glow plugs have fuses?
The high current side of the glow plug system does not have a replaceable fuse from the factory. The stock system uses fusible links. Check for power at the battery side of the glow plug relay. If you have no power there you’ve got a blown fusible link.
