Who designed the InterCity 125?

Designer Kenneth Grange
Designer Kenneth Grange – creator of the InterCity 125 train and Britain’s first parking meter – has been knighted in the New Year Honours list. Now a Royal College of Art visiting professor, he also designed angle-poise lamps and the Kenwood Chef mixer. And the 83-year-old was behind Kodak’s Instamatic camera.

Why are UK trains limited to 125?

The Class 390 was designed for 140 mph (225 km/h), but is currently limited to 125 mph (201 km/h) due to a lack of cab signalling which is required by regulations for trains to be permitted to operate at more than 125 mph.

Why does the class 91 have a blunt end?

An additional requirement of the design was that they could operate as normal locomotives. This led to a second cab being incorporated into the unstreamlined ‘blunt end’. Operating with the blunt end first limits the maximum speed of the locomotive to 110 mph (180 km/h).

Is the class 91 still in service?

Class 91s hauling Mk 4s will remain with London North Eastern Railway until 2023. Ten rakes of coaches and ten ’91s’ will be used, with two additional spare ’91s’ and a handful of spare Mk 4s also retained.

Are InterCity trains electric?

Our intercity trains can be either fully electric or bi-mode. The bi-mode capability is a world-leading innovation, which allows the train to switch seamlessly between diesel and electric power joining people and communities on electrified and non-electrified routes.

What is the strongest diesel train?

The Union Pacific Centennial is the largest and most powerful diesel locomotive ever built.
